Pet Surgery at Our Practice

At Island Lake Veterinary Clinic we’re proud to offer an array of pet surgery services for cats and dogs. Your pet’s complete safety is always our foremost concern during any procedure. Therefore, we apply extensive safety measures, including pre-anesthetic bloodwork to check for underlying concerns. Furthermore, we are happy to offer our patients laser surgery over traditional surgery for added benefits. Whether you and your pet live right here in Island Lake or the surrounding area, we can fulfill your pet’s health needs with our safe, advanced surgical capabilities.

The most important surgery that your pet will ever have in their lifetime is their spay or neuter procedure. This procedure is important for the health and well-being of your pet. If a pet leads a long, healthy life, it is likely that the spay or neuter procedure will be the only surgery they will ever require. For this reason, we strive to ensure that this procedure is performed in a compassionate and gentle manner, giving you and your pet a good experience throughout.

Anesthesia Safety and Monitoring

Every surgical procedure has its risks, which is why we take extra steps to maintain safety. Before administering anesthesia, we perform pre-anesthetic diagnostics to assess your pet’s health and organ function and detect potential problems. Standard pre-anesthetic diagnostics include a Complete Blood Count (CBC), a blood chemistry profile, and ECG analysis to check the heart’s electrical impulses. We will pre-medicate your pet with analgesics (painkillers) and antibiotics.

During surgery, we use the safest anesthetics, which means they are easily broken down (metabolized) in the body, resulting in minimal side effects. Your pet will have an IV catheter through which we administer fluids and medications to keep them stable and comfortable.

Once your pet is intubated, an experienced veterinary technician will stand by to monitor your pet throughout their surgery. This includes:

  • Blood pressure
  • Core body temperature
  • Continuous ECG to monitor heart rate
  • Blood oxygen levels (pulse oximetry)
  • Respiration

Post-Surgical Treatment

We utilize post-surgical pain management to ensure that our patients are comfortable and relaxed as they begin the healing process. Our team utilizes multimodal pain management to meet the various needs that your pet may have, depending on the procedure they underwent. We’ll discuss your pet’s condition and needs with you throughout the process as your concerns are a huge portion of selecting the proper treatment option for your pet.

We encourage pet owners to be present in the room when their pets are waking up from anesthesia. After all, wouldn’t you want to see the faces of your loved ones the moment you woke up from surgery? We veterinarians make every effort to treat our animal patients the way that human patients would be treated in the same circumstances. Our recovery room is dedicated to that purpose, with a comfortable couch for the patient and their family.

As with all of our care at Island Lake Veterinary Clinic, you and your pet are our highest priority.
